Custom House Exhibition Center

This project was for Constructed Landscapes, an urban design studio which
focused on public space and revitilization strategies for New London, CT. Throughout the term, we studied strategies to bring residents to the downtown area to live, work, and relax.

I chose to work between the waterfront and commercial corridor of Bank St, which I perceived as being sort of the crux of the problem. The downtown is disconnected from the waterfront, and I aimed to create more connections to this incredible resource. Though I created a masterplan for a larger downtown area, my detailed intervention proposed a multifunctional exhibition space adjacent to an existing museum of maritime culture. The core of the design involves an outdoor amphitheater and indoor auditorium, separated by a retractable glass wall with an exhibition hall above. This aims to break down the indoor/outdoor binary and create a new cultural hub for the city. On a wider scale, the project also aims to address urban flooding through a series of “Floodable Micro-Forests,” provide new spaces for leisure, retail, and outdoor dining, and proposes new high-density housing using existing vacant space.
